Of course both companies use their platform to increase user lock-in which indirectly helps their core revenue streams of advertising (in Facebook’s case) and hardware sales (for Apple). Windows Mobile has been a disappointment to date but Azure (an outgrowth of the.NET framework) is growing as a force on the cloud/server side.

How They Make Money: Majority of Kayak’s revenue actually comes from advertising on their site (55%), not lead generation or referral fees to travel suppliers as you might think (more on this below). Mobile Usage: 8% of 2010 query volume (mobile app download growth of 344% YoY). 2010 Net Income: $8 million.
