Java is a great language for enterprises and is commonly used by many big dotcoms, banks and airlines, but its relatively slow development pace and higher barrier to entry make it inappropriate for most early-stage businesses. Hiring a good team of PHP developers is neither likely nor easy for the non-technical.

One of the things I do as a founder of a later stage startup is to meet with early stage entrepreneurs to help them get their companies going. Inevitably, the excuses begin: I need to hire people to build the product. Then, forget everything else, VCs included, and just build. I don’t know any developers. No phone system.
