The ability to copy and disseminate banned ideas undermined repressive regimes from Poland to Iran to the Soviet Union. One of the most effective weapons in the Cold War was the mimeograph machine and the VCR. In the 21 st century, authoritarian governments still fear their own people talking to each other and asking questions.
