Getting features and fixes into hands of users was the greatest priority - a test environment would just get in the way and slow down the validation coming from having code running in production. As the product matured, they were able to ratchet up the quality to prevent regression on features that had been truly embraced by their customers.

Investors can delay until you’re desperate and then ratchet the terms. Potential acquirers can enter due diligence to learn your trade secrets and then launch a competing product. After the team-poaching mentioned earlier, the goal ended up being to keep product development moving while a new tech team was found.

It also helps ratchet down the pressure, since so many of the interruptions that plague the typical hacker are actually the same bugs recurring over and over. Sometimes, a great hacker has the potential to grow into the CTO of a company, and in those cases all you need is an outside mentor who can work with them to develop those skills.
