Kayak was started here in my backyard of Boston… co-founder & CTO Paul English and the product/engineering team is based here in Concord MA. Historically more revenue came from distribution/lead-gen (57% in 2007), but this tipped in 2008 though appears to be steady from 2009 to 2010 at about 58% advertising and 42% distribution.

In 2007 we raised our first fund – Foundry Venture Capital 2007. Each is roughly invested 1/3rd into companies in Colorado, 1/3rd into companies in the bay area, and 1/3rd into companies in the rest of the US (Boston, NY, Seattle, LA, Portland, Austin, Minneapolis, Washington D.C., Burlington, and Phoenix.).

This is true not just for entirely new product categories like tablets, but even existing ones… smartphones had been around for 5+ years before the first gen iPhone launched in 2007 (remember Palm Treos and the original Blackberry phones?).
