You create something that has value and gets traction and yet youve created it in a way that the software is considered "free." A friend of mine has a company that builds open source applications in spaces that are a bit less innovative than Elgg, but they do very well financially through the packaging and support models.

I’m not afraid to pick up the phone, cold call someone, use LinkedIn to find someone who’s recently left a company that might be considered competitive and ask them for advise around the business model and marketplace. However, i need a technical person (web developer) who can bring my vision to life. Google won’t care.
