The trend for social networks (Facebook, Twitter, etc) is to expose their graph interfaces so new applications can automatically inspect and bring new value to undiscovered social patterns. The semantic trend is to add standardized metadata to everything under the sun, think Twitter Annotations, RDFa, Linked Open Data Cloud, Data.gov, etc.
