Thats an important job, for sure, and Ive been called upon to do it from time to time. So I initially gravitated to the CTO title, and not VP of Engineering.

I break the answer to that question down into three engines: Viral - this is the business model identified in the presentation as "Get Users." In this model, you take some fraction of the lifetime value of each customer and plow that back into paid acquisition through SEM, banner ads, PR, affiliates, etc.

It's very hard for PLG to be the only or main motion with infrastructure products because it's not something one engineer will just test and buy. Obviously if you target enterprise customers, you usually have a very large ACV (Annual Contract Value) and the product usually is complex. That is a natural hurdle for PLG motion.
