They were referring to non-founder engineers, most commonly the first hire for technology businesses. Every time a startup raises capital, all common shareholders are diluted. In cases where a startup is sold within a few years time, there is often acceleration agreements for unvested shares. How much do they cough up?

Developer, engineer, CTO, or technical co-founder? Sure, it garners the "winning " reply above, but in reality I find this answer that directs the asker to go hire an inexpensive prototype development team much more helpful than the "leading answer" that gives the "Quora rockstar engineer" point of view.
