Online social networking is a concept still being evangelized even in Silicon Valley… Friendster is in private beta (wasn’t until Oct 2003 they received Google acquisition offer which they turned down for Kleiner/Benchmark round). This is my 2nd time trying this, first time was in 1999. A lot has changed.

The question on everyone’s lips is, of course, ‘how come a two year old startup with no revenues is worth $1bn?’. Revenues from mobile are an important part of Facebook’s growth going forward and photo sharing on their mobile app is mediocre at best. I think that is the difference between 1999 and today.

In the summer of 1999, I started working on a startup from my college dorm. Id been on the internet since I was playing MUDs as a kid, but by 1999 I felt Id already missed the boat. Could we have built the first college-based social network five years before Facebook ? I pretty much missed all the trends. all about luck.
