The human tendency to moralize about debt affects engineers, too. For example, IMVU’s early business model was made possible by Paypal’s easy self-serve and open access payment system. Although it costs to pay down the principal, we gain by reduced interest payments in the future. He’s right.

In this model, the product manager is really a backlog administrator. Lots of CEO’s tell me this is the model they’re in and it’s not working. If you think the product manager job is what’s described in a Certified Scrum Product Owner class, you almost certainly fall into this category.

An equally important challenge in a growing business is scaling your development team. Most technology companies hit a wall with dev team scalability somewhere around ten developers. For example: full-fledged SCRUM, heavyweight tools like Jira, or hiring a project manager or engineering manager. Don’t do that stuff.
