Book Short: Scrum ptious . I just finished reading Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time , by Jeff Sutherland and JJ Sutherland. Sutherland gets credit for creating the agile framework and bringing the concept scrum to software development over 20 years ago.

Yet, I always assumed that Agile development, the closely aligned practice of BDD (behavior-driven development), and in particular Scrum methodology was by and for teams of developers – that while it scaled up, they did not scale down. Aaron shared that ElevatorUp actually use Cucumber to have clients write and define user stories which are at the heart of Scrum and Agile, and that this approach actually worked extremely well both for his developers and their clients.

Which is why I'm a big advocate for what is sometimes referred to as Dual-Track Scrum. Jeff Patton first shared with me the term "Dual-Track Scrum" and I prefer this term because it better captures the parallel nature of Discovery and Delivery. Another reason I like the Dual-Track Scrum metaphor is that I find many people essentially doing little mini-waterfalls within their Scrum framework. Lean UX and Dual-Track Scrum are made for each other.

With the continuous discovery and delivery trends, many teams are finding that Scrum as a process can be limiting, and that Kanban tends to fit this continuous discovery and delivery model better. Even short of moving to Kanban, I have found many Scrum teams that have adapted Scrum in a Kanban direction for exactly this reason. In this case, they are mainly using the time-boxing of Scrum as a way to structure work and encourage a frequent retrospective.
