The new FinTech Innovation Lab , an annual program run by the New York City Investment Fund and Accenture, had their launch event on Thursday night. Packaged platforms (Force.com/EC2/Azure) are much more likely to succeed than a pure infrastructure play. Corporates don’t. The cloud grows/shrinks as you need it.

EC2 - The Elastic Compute Cloud Service EC2 is essentially a grid in the box. You then can ask EC2 to start instances with your configuration on the fly. In recent years, weve also got great new options all up and down the stack, in particular things like Amazon EC2 and RightScale (none of which would be possible without the free software movement). At the application-stack layer, I see LAMP + Danga as the most common combination. Take a look and let me know what you think.

From a technology perspective, so many parts of the stack have been made easier--from spinning up servers on EC2 and S3, to getting hosted Rails infrastructure on Heroku. The success of YCombinator and Techstars has spawned countless new incubators. There are incubators to help you out on the financing side, too.

At the bottom end of the stack is storage (S3) and processing (EC2). And one of the cooler new products that will emerge in 2011 is called LocalResponse and is being created by Nihal Mehta , who has pivoted from his previous company Buzzd, but I’m sworn to secrecy on what he’s up to until he releases it publicly.
