Lacking vertical alignment, all of the frameworks were technically half grids. Fundamentally, frameworks resemble table-based layout of yore: Horizontal rows divided into vertical blocks. Up to 2005 they were the only solution supported by all major browsers at the time. Some frameworks had offsets, or units of empty space.
