I built a 3,000 person tech networking organization in NYC back in 2006 and was one of the first 100 members of the NY Tech Meetup back in 2005 so I’ve participated in a lot of these conversations. Mailchimp looks like it’s going to be a huge exit down in Atlanta, but that might turn out to be a one-off.

I would experience some social anxiety mixed with generally feeling overwhelmed by my own internal scorecarding and thoughts of, “Am I networking enough?” I can’t say that Covid-19 has made me rethink the personal utility of the really big conferences (I don’t attend many), but it does make me miss the curation of smaller groups.

Social media ROI is notoriously hard to calculate, so I based my calculations on conversions directly related to people taking a tangible action, like subscribing to a freebie, purchasing an experience (challenge, program, retreat, academy), or becoming a press partner or ambassador on our team. This leads to long-term growth on both ends.

I was also sick of my own curated life on Facebook and thought, there must be a place more interesting than this to hang out online. Something to keep extroverts from dominating the conversation and. I figured I was not alone in wanting this product, so I asked around and it turns out that lots of other women wanted it too.
