I lived through the time when working in my first job in Ann Arbor Michigan we had to get out a map to find out that San Jose was not only in Puerto Rico but there was a city with that same name in California. For life sciences it was the Genentech IPO in 1980 that proved to investors that life science startups could make them a ton of money.

We had seen the reactions of people playing with the prototypes in our lab and when we demo’d it to our sales force.

If “Smucker’s” can be slapped on food and annually generate billions of sales, chances are that your company name, no matter how mediocre, will not preclude you from achieving significant success. However, if this is true, “Aardvark” would have been a more clever choice and equally as relevant to online book sales.

The woman in charge of sales was so tenacious that I used to feelsorry for potential customers on the phone with her. This was not uncommonduring the Bubble, especially in companies run by business types, who thought of software development as something terrifying thattherefore had to be carefully planned. Watch them.
