When he founded Netflix as a DVD rental service in 1997, Hastings had already led one company, Pure Software, from its birth to an IPO. I’ve been married for 22 years now and when I had my first company I just assumed I would run that company for the rest of my life and keep doing software development.

Or the boy in Detroit who becomes a software developer and creates an app to educate a child in the slums of Brazil. People ask me if innovation can flourish in places like Africa and my response is that I encounter innovation everywhere there, when people are forced to innovate to survive, often with scarce resources.

Fast forward to 1997. If you are a software developer, try to work for a while on a web-scale problem. I started coding in the 80s. No web, no connectivity for the most part, just simple games, random programs, hardware drivers, random utilities. Basic, Pascal, Assembly, C. I download my first mp3, a novelty back then.
