As my partner Rob Go has written , our goal is to invest half in consumer web and mobile and half in business-focused ventures. We’ve been remarkably consistent on this dimension as well: five of the recent 13 investments were B2C, five were B2B, and three you could categorize as B2B2C. BUSINESS-FOCUSED (B2B).

Warby manages this killer combination of moderate prices and solid margins through supply chain efficiencies on the back end and on the front end picture perfect web branding and “white glove” customer service. Very impressively, for a mid-priced player in the eyeglasses space, Warby’s gross margins are estimated at a healthy 60%+.

That sounds like a lot of responsibility for someone fresh out of undergrad as I was then, but in reality both of these were peripheral elements of PayPal’s core web-based payment product which was still heavily concentrated on eBay auctions at the time. So not a new store of value and this is basically scenario #1 described above.
