Long before there was the Lean Startup, Business Model Canvas or Customer Development there was a guy in Santa Barbara California who had already figured it out. On Monday, in San Jose, near the factory, we met with UltraTech Stepper, a friendly account. We did a quick overview of the product.

The Afro-Tech operates on a basis of permissionless innovation — we do not need pre-approval to be black and innovative in tech and as for me, I been doing advanced and epic Internet tech stuff since 1994 so I’m not exactly someone that is easily impressed by an “ex-Google engineer” like the rest of yall, just saying.

With that in mind, I created a new course at San Jose State last year, the Entrepreneurship Lab (E-Lab). The business environment is much more complex today, and the hopeful entrepreneur need to understand more of the environment in which they will operate. I also teach Entrepreneurial Finance at San Jose State.

Many entrepreneurial programs feature a business plan competition, which is a great exercise. At SJSU, we also have a business plan competition in the spring, which ideally allows the students to build a viable business model around their NIF projects. She is planning on starting the business upon graduation.

The 6-year firm survival rate was 60% for dead founders and 61% for live founders, while the average Operating Return on Assets was 6% for dead founders vs. 8% for live founders, but neither are statistically significant (Hvilde 15). I also teach Entrepreneurial Finance at San Jose State.

Never one to propose popular or easy plans, Andy suggests rebuilding our industrial infrastructure and employment through financial incentives and taxing products of offshore labor and using the proceeds to incent companies to scale their American operations. Well, our VP Operations at Fliqz, Daniel Marcus , dabbles in creating writing and music when not managing our data center. Very near and dear to my heart for many reasons besides the math, owner/operator/vc wrangling, and one of the main characters lives in Pacifica like me. I also teach Entrepreneurial Finance at San Jose State.
