We had a finance group for all of the bank branches based in San Diego, and I wrote programs to download stuff from the mainframe so we could do analysis three days faster than they could send us the data. I did programming for the career center at UC San Diego, trying to build programs for the career center.

I found myself pushed into entrepreneurship after being laid off from a Marketing Director position with a San Diego based high tech company in 2003. I was turned on to the concept of coworking in 2010, when I hosted a networking event, for an organization I was leading, at San Diego’s first coworking space, the Hive Haus.

I owe ya’ a 20 minute call (or in person next time I’m in San Diego). It’s interesting that the question is pitch deck’s being obsolete versus business plans being obsolete. So very few investors want Business Plans any more. And then was hired by Stephen Spielberg for Minority Report.

At the time, Tom was a partner at Enterprise Partners Venture Capital in San Diego. If the entrepreneur accomplished the milestones set forth in their business plan, than they were deemed worthy and would receive funding. Years ago I served on a funding panel with Tom Clancy. This led Clancy to make an important decision.

I read way too many business plans with overly optimistic projections. I'm talking plans showing the entrepreneurs generating tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues in just a few years. It then expanded to serving New York City, Boston, Washington DC, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
