There was a computer training lab run by a company called Prosoft, but that's like having an Apex Tech and expecting to be the next Detroit. On top of that, they tend to be the locus of innovation networks. It's no accident that the people who give out money have the largest networks of people floating around them.

Events for enthusiasts, called Maker Faires, now stretch far outside California to places such as Detroit, New York and even Shenzhen, China. Network with potential cofounders and strategic partners. A recent California event packed in 100,000 people. I believe the Maker Movement and startups are made for each other.

I gave a keynote on entrepreneurship to MPowered , the student Entrepreneurship Organization, spoke on a panel on Entrepreneurship and the Aerospace Industry, and gave another keynote at the Ann Arbor New Tech Meetup and A2Geeks , the regional startup network. Bet Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area have a few startups in that space.

In the US we now have some very well established incubation programs run by high-caliber mentors including IdeaLab, yCombinator, TechStars, BetaWorks and Launchpad LA. Suddenly everybody wants to be an incubator. Maybe off-shoring could become more on-shoring and helping drum up employment in places like Detroit.
