I love working with people from around the world and truly believe that distributed teams provide huge benefits for small businesses and startups. Even worse, some companies, like Yahoo, have rolled back their distributed teams. Business owners report that their biggest concern with distributed teams is lower levels of productivity.

In fact, employees of these huge platform companies often do not know how to growth-hack their way from a standing start; they may be too accustomed to the massive traffic and structural advantages of their previous employers. While such an experience would be nice, it certainly is not a pre-requisite.

There are several ways to make progress evident - the Scrum team model is my current favorite. If you have a true cross-functional team, empowered (a la Scrum) to do whatever it takes to succeed its likely they will converge on the result quickly. I would add, though, a further question: Do new employees write code on their first day?

Founders and early employees tend to be very self-directed so the need for management is nearly non-existent. For example: full-fledged SCRUM, heavyweight tools like Jira, or hiring a project manager or engineering manager. Everyone is a generalist and works on a little bit of everything. Don’t do that stuff.
