What’s astonishing and few other than those who lived it as startups (I launched my second startup in this era) realize is how profound of an impact that rise of Amazon AWS (S3 & EC2) had on the startup market. The “A Round” of my startup in 1999 was $16.5 million and my A Round in 2005 was only $500,000 (and that’s all I ever raised).

Pinterest now supports 18m users with growth running at 50% per month with the following: Amazon costs are around $39k for S3 and $30k for EC2 (I assume per month). They have 275 EC2 instances. Traffic costs them $52 an hour during peak times, down to $15 during the night. They have 31 employees, up from 12 in December.

The trend of funding anything from the first $25k to funding $50 million at a billion+ valuation is unlikely to last as the skills and style to be effective at all stages are diverse enough to warrant focus. They then launched processing capabilities (EC2) and we startups suddenly didn’t need to buy production servers.

MySpace would liked to have owned YouTube but didn’t have the public stock valuation to purchase them at the price that Google did. At the bottom end of the stack is storage (S3) and processing (EC2). Google acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion, which at the time seemed laughably high and now seems prescient.
