My conclusion: if you’re a software engineer, with good technical background and ability, you can pretty much write your own ticket in Southern California. Or, what do you do if you’re just coming out of school and all you’ve done is Java coursework? Build a Facebook application or other social networking app.

I do disagree about two other points: First, this isn't the "quora rockstar engineer" perspective. It's my perspective as well and I'm not a software engineer let alone a rockstar. Sooner or later, using PHP or RoR or.Net or some Java framework, that 0.5x So it can be done.
