Air Force Pitch Day was awesome

Last week, I was in New York and decided to stop by the Air Force Pitch Day. AFWERX has a program called SBIR , which is a way that startups can work with the US Air Force with little or no hassles. What a great experience. And this event was just a portion of the over $75M that was awarded for 242 contracts in just 10 days.

Free Government Money for Startups

At $100,000 or so per grant, perhaps 2-3000 pre-seed and seed/startup companies receive SBIRs and other government grants per year.

I'll add one more point: The SBIR program is based on a dated notion of small business research, and the multi-year process doesn't line up with the speed of many modern startups. In many cases I look at an SBIR and say "how about I just build that and sell it to you when it's done," but that is unrealistic today.
