Everyone has to be a generalist and able to work on any kind of problem - specialists will be (at best) somewhat bored and (at worst) highly distracting because they want to steer product development into whatever realm they specialize in. The team should own the vision and direction for the part of your product that it works on.

Good article, this is exactly the reason Im still primarily a PHP developer rather than Ruby or Python. Although Ive enjoyed learning and using other platforms/languages, its the fact that PHP has grown around building websites rather than satisfying the intellectual needs of Computer Science researchers. the list goes on).
