In the era of social networks, LinkedIn, Facebook messaging, Quora and email addresses that are easily guessable, it’s easy to think that maybe you should just approach a VC directly. Conventional wisdom says that you can only build big businesses in Silicon Valley so as a VC you need to be there.

I want to say first that I went to school down in southern California and I still love it down there however for my industry, technology, I love it up here. Similarly, the bulk of the companies getting funding are still California-based. After Northern California and Southern California the biggest area of investment geographically was in international companies. I see online video, mobile location, specialized social networking, and other craps.
