The market size for online advertising, e-commerce, and web premium services are 1/10th to 1/3rd the size they are today. The terms and valuation for both offers were comparable and when the team debated which path to choose, we all agreed both firms would have made good partners. We three partners are working hard.

Union Square Ventures The next morning I got to spend time with Brad Burnham , partner at Union Square Ventures talking about their investment strategy and insights about web-based businesses. Bill and his partner Fred Wilson have invested in ~30 or so companies with 27 still active. Back in 1999, it all ended very bad.

Later, Michiewicz partnered up with someone much older (not 15) who had the business know-how to take WebmasterResources to the next level. Consider partnering up with forums and pay forums who send customers your way. The dating website basically partnered up with forums overseas and acquired customers that way.

Mobile advertising became more targeted and user friendly by adapting to the small screen — but advertisers are slow to adopt , with much upside still to come. The viral nature of social media no doubt aided this growth, as did improvements in the online shopping experience.

In fact, my first website I can’t show you, because I don’t think we have internet access, but I had a Geocities website in 1999 for a card game I used to play called Magic the Gathering. It made this site very sticky and it grew organically through viral word-of-mouth as a result of doing that. In 2004 I began blogging.
