We sell the winning designs to customers in the form of personalized wedding invitations, Christmas cards , and other stationery and photo card products. Ive occasionally worked with executive recruiters, for example in hiring a CTO for my first company, Eve.com. This time, I decided to handle the process myself.

This approach worked much better, but by this point one of the co-founders was frustrated with the customer dynamics (all business facing) and decided to leave to start a new consumer-facing business (he left on good terms, we are still good friends, and he’s much happier today).

Of course, users won’t be able to customize their project as fully as if they were coding it from scratch. But in most cases, that level of customization isn’t necessary. In the past, a business that needed a custom app, website, or other digital solution would have to be prepared to make a big investment.

It means they have to deal with finances and customers and investors and other things that aren’t what they love to do, which is building software. I absolutely want cofounders when the time comes. But software engineers also pay a price for working by themselves. I have side projects, and I hold entrepreneurial ambitions.
