I’m currently coming up on my two-year anniversary as a software engineer on December 19, 2018. Before working as a software engineer, I was already in “tech”, just not at a startup.

Just take a look at one of the most impressive examples: in 2018, Amazon’s net profit exceeded $10 billion , which is twice as much as in 2017. Develop a software solution. Building a software product, the massive part of your budget is the developers’ salary. Junior engineers cannot deliver a high-quality product.

Take software developers as an example. Coming up with an idea for a new piece of software, developing it, and testing it is expensive. Yet once the software is coded, it can be reproduced millions of times at virtually no cost. Rigid union contracts constrain salaries, work schedules and promotions.

He came to the United States in 2001 to study Software Engineering at Auburn University. We then moved our Chief Software Architect over. I wanted several of the software engineers to join me at our next startup but their employment was tied to BuildOnline. I hope that didn’t have a stature of limitation!

In order to do that, they decided three things were crucial: teaching people to code, creating a sense of place around the tech industry, and proving it's possible to build and ship world-class software from places like Fresno. Whereas, taking the job at X company, advancing to Y position, attaining Z salary, didn't feel natural.
