I observed that teaching case studies and/or how to write a business plan as a capstone entrepreneurship class didn’t match the hands-on chaos of a startup. Our goal was to teach both theory and practice.

Instead of students or faculty coming in with their own ideas — we now have them working on societal problems, whether they’re problems for the State Department or the Department of Defense, or non-profits/NGOs, or for the City of Oakland or for energy or the environment, or for anything they’re passionate about.

The other change is that universities, instead of being passive, have become active in building an entrepreneurial community. And the odds of learning from faculty who actually had experienced the chaos and uncertainty of building a startup was low. They’ve become outward-facing universities.

They were providing low-cost healthy meals for schools across the country and, before the crisis, were delivering two million federally reimbursable school and community meals per week nationwide. And we've layered that with another crises of the exposure of continued racial injustice throughout our communities.
