Here are my 10 tips (oh, and by the way, I did raise venture capital for Palo Alto Software at one point, and I’ve been a consultant to venture capital for 35 years). Your chances are way better if you fit their normal profile and you’ve been able to meet one of the partners, or get an introduction from somebody they know.

If your team has a depth of expertise in software, that won’t help you get funding for a new hardware solution. It starts with having a vision and an ability to get the message across in your elevator pitch, in a written business plan and one-on-one with potential investors. Focus on prior results, not titles.

Refine your elevator pitch. Most of the great software startups that I’ve been involved in have at least one technical co-founder (and many have more than one.) So before you ask someone to even spend an hour of their time writing code or reviewing specs make sure you can pay them in some form (coffee, dinner, laptop, etc.),
