I remember the first time I read the Innovator’s Dilemma in 1997. He explained that companies have a penchant for continually improving sustaining products by adding more features to solve existing customer problems, and while this maximized profit, it was a trap. Building better startups. I never got to say thank you.

By 1997 E.piphany was a fast growing startup with customers, revenue and something approaching a repeatable business model. 1997 was also that year that Microsoft was in the middle of the browser wars with Netscape. 1997 was also that year that Microsoft was in the middle of the browser wars with Netscape.

I know that most people who are close to them tend to deny their existence, as we saw in the great housing bubble of 2002-2007 and the dot com bubble of 1997-2000. For others it feels like a two-speed economy, where rules apply to hot tech startups that don’t apply elsewhere. customers who paid for services often get burned.

In fact, at the time (1996-1997) we offered both a downloadable product, that our customers could install on their own servers, and a “hosted-offering”, which came to be known as “On-Demand”, then the “ASP” (Application Service Provider) model, and today we call it “SaaS” (Software as a Service).
