At a young age I watched her open a bakery, which in the early 80′s was ahead of its time in serving croissants, gourmet coffee and high-end, homemade cakes, cheesecakes and french pastries for our small town of Sacramento, California (Carmichael, if you know the area). My mom was an entrepreneur – she was kind of my inspiration for entrepreneurship. She was president of the UJA in Sacramento – the United Jewish Appeal. Then she opened a bakery and a second bakery and then a restaurant – in Sacramento. Then everyone just started calling me a serial entrepreneur. What are you going to do?

Kleiner has taken a lot of s**t in the press over the past few years and as someone who has known many of the partners and staff over the years I find almost all of it unwarranted. But I use this all of the time as a metaphor when talking with entrepreneurs in person and I’ve found it to be a useful way of explaining to entrepreneurs what is going in in the VC’s life. I have no idea why, but that’s always how it always felt to me when I was an entrepreneur raising money.
