When he founded Netflix as a DVD rental service in 1997, Hastings had already led one company, Pure Software, from its birth to an IPO. Streaming obviously has the future and will be relevant as long as the Internet stays relevant. So Asia is going to be a challenge, because it is such a different market.

It’s one thing to hear from other people that Southeast Asia (SEA) is up-and-coming, but it was totally another thing to go there and talk with so many people about the future. I think this explains why we tend to see consumer businesses emerge first – tech-savvy internet users are easiest to reach.

This was pre Internet. It was embarrassing to witness yet it was one of the least forms of gender bias I experienced in my time working in continental Europe and Asia. In 1997 I was sent to England to work on a project for the oil company Halliburton. We got to define Internet offerings for one of the largest telcos in Europe.
