For many Westerners, Victoria Island resembles the polar opposite of the imaginary Manhattan Island, the high-security prison depicted in John Carpenter’s film Escape From New York. On the island, life is as it is in the West, but the danger lies outside the island and across the Third Mainland Bridge. But somehow Lagos works.

My whole world blew up in 2001. My portfolio melted down with the bursting of the Internet bubble. I was in New York for it, having taken a redeye the night before from San Francisco. While I was trying to be helpful in general to the firm and my partners, I didn’t like the way we were operating.
