Limited Partners or LPs (the people who invest into VC funds) have taken notice as 2014 is by all accounts the busiest year for LPs since the Great Recession began. Because this is all VCs do and if we intend to work with all of our fellow VCs and entrepreneurs when the rain ends and the sun shines again our reputations matter greatly.

On the one hand it denied Facebook from enormous amounts of web traffic that Google controlled at the time but in the longer-run due to network effects of social networks it made Facebook significantly more powerful. It is a really big historical decision that Facebook made not to have Google index its pages.

If you’re really an entrepreneur you’ll find a way to network with the right people. Some angel groups have a reputation for slow decision making processes and not enough value add. I can say that you should do your homework to find out the reputation. Social Network s / Search / Blogs – Obvious, huh?

One company with an astonishingly high rake is recently IPOed Shutterstock, a photo-purchasing marketplace where the content owner receives only 30% of gross receipts. Combined with a bidding and reputation system, oDesk had built an “ebay for work.” The bottom line is they could have been amazing partners.

Today, Groupon is worth about 1/10th what it was on the day of its IPO, and revenues have been flat for years. Network effects occur when increased usage of a good or service leads to an increase in its value, which in turn makes it more attractive and this leads to further increases in usage.
