My conclusion: if you’re a software engineer, with good technical background and ability, you can pretty much write your own ticket in Southern California. Build a Facebook application or other social networking app. Get involved in open source, as much as you can. Why do I say that?

While I’d be the first to argue that the best place to learn to code is to download and use open-source software, it was at my university that I was first forced to grapple with foreign concepts and others’ opinions. Opens doors all through life. In other words, I learned a little empathy.
