I know that most people who are close to them tend to deny their existence, as we saw in the great housing bubble of 2002-2007 and the dot com bubble of 1997-2000. I said, “It’s much easier now than it was in 2008/09.&# Or worse yet they may never get financed. That happened a lot in 2002 and again in 2008.

Yes, it’s true that FOMO (fear of missing out) is driving some irrational behavior and valuations amongst uber competitive deals and well-financed VCs. Try charging customers for your product when you have 12 competitors giving the product away free finances by $20 million of VC. The Exit Problem. There are 20x more consumers online.

Freeloader — On $3m invested, sold for $38m in 1996 — shut down in 1997. After I sold Smart Bear, that division has increased revenue and profit every year, for five years, even through the 2008/2009 economic disaster. It’s not about the financing path, it’s about what you’ve decided to build.

This probably wasn’t a fun period of time for a new VC but nonetheless probably made Mike stronger than having started in 1997. Venture Financings we Discussed. Spun off from Freewebs in 2008, based in Palo Alto. This lasted from about 2001-2004. I shall be looking to replicate this in Los Angeles.

I remember back in 2008 watching Nate , Todd , Kortina , others, spin up web apps in seconds, letting their creative juices flow almost instantaneously from idea into live services (from thought into expression), some that worked and some that never saw widespread visibility. USV has made multiple investments in all these areas.
