How They Make Money: Majority of Kayak’s revenue actually comes from advertising on their site (55%), not lead generation or referral fees to travel suppliers as you might think (more on this below). Revenue growth: 51% YoY (2010), 1% YoY (2009), 131% YoY (2008). Distribution revenue is CPC and CPA. .

This is my recap of what stood out to me this year and what I’m looking forward to in 2012 — we are only in the beginning of many revolutions. Mobile advertising became more targeted and user friendly by adapting to the small screen — but advertisers are slow to adopt , with much upside still to come.

Obligatory chart: signups over time (July of 2012 incomplete, could only fetch accounts created before July 18th for some reason). The distribution of followers per account is a power law (duh). It increased to 9 in mid-2008, and to 10 in 2010. They are also the prime audience for many advertisers, but obviously not for all.

Specialized, proprietary cable TV distribution is gradually giving way to big, fast, cheap IP pipes. Of course, HTML5 & native apps will enable the long-awaited vision of “interactive TV” I’ve written about this before (going back years): One more step to IP-delivered television (2008). HBO), and cable companies.

A Wall Street Journal piece from April 2012 reports on the impact of $16 million in venture capital awarded to Coursera to increase the scope of the program. Later, services could be marketed to members or favorable advertising rates might be negotiated. Many companies, such as Coursera , make their services available for free.
