Nice to have does not motivate a revenue stream. Technologies that cure world hunger may find that that hungry people don’t have money, and government agencies as customers are a very long sales cycle. Just because users support your free trial doesn’t mean they will pay for the solution.

It wasn’t that they didn’t want to pay, but for anything above a certain dollar amount, it had to be a committee decision, and Universities are a notoriously bad market to crack (probably second to the government). Over the course of that relationship that lasted several years, we did over $1M in revenue just from HP.

They excite investors because some offer great revenue potential. And yet, in spite of all this, small emerging firms are largely left out of government contracting. And yet, in spite of all this, small emerging firms are largely left out of government contracting. Selling to the government is a slow process in the beginning.

The company sells to local governments, real estate management companies, educational institutions--anyone responsible for public or private infrastructure. Slow sales cycles. I'd bet that anyone who looked at this company's early sales traction would have asked her, "Wait. how many salespeople do you have?

There are multiple reasons for that, but a major one is that both VC and research funding is concentrated in areas where there appears to be short-term revenues, as opposed to areas that will save more lives and quite likely generate both long-term revenues and savings for society.
