As one of the coherent commentators says below, Joel Spolsky himself laments schools teaching Java with the same basic reasoning of my article above, albeit more diplomatically stated.) .NET My example: I have mainly programmed _by choice_ in Python, Ruby, Scala, Haskell, C# and currently I’m doing Java. The list goes on and on.

Some of them are probably still cursing my name, because - lets face it - PHP can be pretty painful. When we started IMVU in 2004, we could rely on a staggering amount of open source software that jumpstarted our initial product offering. I didnt mean by this that Java programmers are dumb. As a language, its inelegant.

We call the automation "Priam", after Cassandras father in Greek mythology, it runs in a separate Apache Tomcat JVM and we are in the process of removing Netflix specific code from Priam so that we can release it as an open source project later this year. Why we use and contribute to open source software. at 2:41 PM.

While there’s still plenty of that in the system, many of the products and services are maturing and the particular segment Standing Cloud has gone after has suddenly become incredibly important to a large number of hosting, managed services, and cloud providers (often the same thing) not named Amazon.
