Netflix was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph to combat late fees for video rentals. The company didn’t turn a profit until 2003, but by 2005 business was booming – Netflix was shipping out a million DVDs daily. Reddit, a popular website for news and discussion, was founded in 2005 by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian.

I recently wrote about the 12 tips to building successful startup communities. I lived in London from 1997-2005 and for 6 of those years ran my startup based out of London. Failure in startups seems to now be embedded in startup communities like NY and LA. I remember this lesson well.

Michael Smith, leader of the Social Innovation team at the Case Foundation , introduced the Foundation as a non-profit started in 1997 by Steve Case (AOL co-founder) and his wife, Jean Case. Case Foundation didn’t have a website until 2005, although founded 1997. Goal: tap into power of developers to solve community problems.

The Kauffman Foundation’s research on this matter is clear: from 1997 to 2005, job growth in the US was driven entirely by start-ups. Policy makers have finally been listening to the start-up and entrepreneurial community to adjust the policies to prevent the choking off of growth. It’s new businesses.
