Alerts and monitoring I use nagios and ganglia to implement both system and application level monitoring and alerting on the overall health of the production cluster. Using memcacheds multiget, which allows the fetching of many keys in parallel, I have written code to aggregate all the shard lookups for a given page and prefetch them, reducing the overhead even further. The mappings never change (unless you build a data migration tool, in which case they change rarely) and so are easy to cache.
