The past year was a wild ride for startups and founders, giving a whole new meaning to the ”rollercoaster” aspect of being an entrepreneur. The press took notice, especially since just a few months later startups were laying off employees en-masse to cut costs. Sustainable growth: Prioritise sales efficiency over growth at all costs.

Jan Koum, one of WhatsApp’s founders, immigrated to the US from Communist Ukraine as a teenager. He worked at Yahoo, where he met his co-founder. If this acquisition, cited as the largest venture backed exit ever, doesn’t change that view, I’m not sure what will.

Among its many implications, the digital office means that jobs don’t necessarily need to be done in-person, and today’s startup leaders are realizing that many projects can be done at a lower cost remotely, without any drop in quality. Still, COVID-19 helped tip the balance towards a globally distributed model.
