So went back to school, got my M B A from N Y U and had a very brief stint in finance. Felt like I had to try out finance just because I had my M B A from N Y U, and that's what people from Y U did. 70% of majors went into were finance majors, and I tried it, tried it out. At the time, there were about 10,000 other companies.

As a founder you ultimately have to learn the skills to play your leadership role, and having a seasoned booster early on just moves you faster along that path. I don’t source financing on their behalf, they generally have the reputations and the personal networks to attract capital if I just get it structured fairly.

For six years I was on The Children’s Museum of Atlanta ‘s board. We (myself, the leadership team of the museum, and a handful of other marketing experts/leaders in Atlanta) spent three hours working through an exciting opportunity. It is such a fantastic organization, run by a fantastic leader.

Even when we’re in the thick of running a startup, we look to others in the ecosystem at large for motivation, bold new ideas and perhaps most importantly, leadership cues. That they started out of the house of a woman in north Atlanta (much like myself) and grew to become a household name is noteworthy. We need that leadership.

I wont bother going into details on start-up financing terms ( see this post for an overview of typical VC terms) except to say if you dont know and understand: the firms cap table and valuation. They had a great managment team, A list VCs, great technology, excellent sales traction and market leadership in a very exciting space.

My strength was not in finance, so one of the first things I did was hire someone to handle the books and keep me on a solid financial path, so I could focus on running my business. We are now based in Atlanta, but we started out on a college campus in Jamaica as a team of one: me. My greatest strength is in connecting with people.
