In 1998 it was 150 million, 1999 250 million and by 2000 it had crossed 350 million. According to Google data 30% of all restaurant searches now come via mobile devices. Search for a restaurant, book a table, eat in 30 minutes. Search for movies times, book your tickets, see a show. There are 20x more consumers online.

I had previously raised VC in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2005. There was no viral social networking products back then like Twitter where people could easily discover your content. The only other ways to get discovered was to have good organic search results or to get covered by a major blog site. And covered we did. Folksonomy.

Business Model Affects Metrics and Exit Criteria Web-based Business Model Exit Criteria In a web-business model you’re looking for traffic, users, conversion, virality, etc – not revenue. Back in 1999, it all ended very bad. I know we have to create something users find valuable (the two-way search, games?)

We were post product and had viral growth, albeit at very small scale and still had to evangelize the concept of a vital coefficient w/ most investors. The viral nature of social media no doubt aided this growth, as did improvements in the online shopping experience. Discovery, in contrast to search, took center stage as Pinterest displayed hockey stick growth (and raised VC money near a $200M valuation in late 2011).
