The dashboards we look at to monitor the health of our products are lagging the experiences our user communities are having. Back and forth flame wars on Twitter, Facebook and elsewhere register as “engagement” and high clickthrough on “new comment” mobile notifications.

Forums & online communities. The beauty of them is that they have communities of like minded people discussing over common interests. The best way to go about forum marketing is by becoming a part of the community – by being there and helping others without asking anything in return. I wouldn’t say so.

My weekly NYC events newsletter has nearly 2,000 subscribers, has almost 50% open rates, and even nailed a 20% clickthrough a couple of weeks ago (usually get 12-15%). My blog wouldn’t have the community around its ideas the way it does. I wouldn’t have the same relationship with the community if I charged for my ideas.
