The Academy For Software Engineering
A VC : Venture Capital and Technology
JANUARY 13, 2012
In the comments (where the good stuff happens), a Google engineer told me to go down to Stuyvesant High School and meet a teacher named Mike Zamansky who had taught him to write code in high school. So began my quest to see more computer science and software engineering in the NYC public school system. The Academy Of Software Engineering is not a "specialized school."

The Psychology of Hiring Great People
MAY 18, 2016
Each person we hire contributes to not only the development of the product, but also to the productivity of the team and overall company culture. This is especially dangerous when hiring mistakes happen at a time when the company is still young and its culture is loosely defined.
DECEMBER 21, 2011
For all the talk about how hard it is to hire in the Valley, first-league companies can literally have their pick of the best people in the world at every function. This phenomenon is especially true of CFOs and sales VPs as these leaders are usually hired later in the company’s lifecycle and the best people can be extremely picky waiting for the right first-league company to come along. HiringIn Europe, most sports leagues participate in a system of Promotion and Relegation.
OCTOBER 23, 2012
Every aspiring CEO has heard of David Ogilvy’s famous admonition , usually paraphrased as “Hire people smarter than yourself” or words to that effect. As I’ve progressed in my career, however, I’ve come to believe in the importance of another, less discussed principle as the company grows: Hire people who are different from you, and who will have the courage to challenge you when it matters. Time to step up: Hiring the VP of Sales. Hiring different at Opsware.

Rehabilitating the Arrogant Engineer
AUGUST 9, 2012
Amongst all the stories, pictures of his family, doctor interactions and discussion of his dreams and his illness, Randy said very clearly to all computer science engineers: The key to innovation is that teams beat individuals. Five Pitfalls of Seed Round Hiring
This is going to be BIG.
JANUARY 6, 2017
Most companies don't get to do more than a handful of hires during their seed round--so the idea of a "recruiting process" might seem a little bit heavy handed. However, these early employees will not only have a lasting impact on the DNA of the company, but hopefully they'll be some of the most important hires you'll ever make. (If If they turn out not to be, you probably hired poorly.) 2) They hire a guy they know. 5) They hire for the wrong set of needs.

Are Marketers Now Required to be Engineers Too?
Startup Marketing Blog
JANUARY 11, 2013
As much as I hate to admit it, online marketers with engineering backgrounds often have a significant advantage over non-engineering marketers. Not only are engineering marketers more capable of getting the essentials done, they can use their reserve of time and creative energy to be scrappy about building marketing experiments. And of course the experiments they build on their own can be much more interesting than us non-engineers.

The Yin and Yang of Product and Engineering
A VC : Venture Capital and Technology
MAY 22, 2010
For a tech company, product and engineering are the heart and soul of the business. When I do a quick mental query of headcount across our entire portfolio of ~30 companies, I think at least 50% and maybe as much as 60% of the entire headcount of our portfolio is in either product or engineering. The engineering person builds the product or manages the team that builds the product, or both. And hiring a really strong VP Product is often an afterthought.

Reverse Engineering a Career
This is going to be BIG.
DECEMBER 5, 2011
He seemed perplexed that they'd even consider hiring someone out of school. It was an exercise in reverse engineering. Some product managers might be more technical, working on feature requirements and interfacing with the engineering team, while others might be more like brand managers who are the GM of their brands. I run into a lot of people trying to switch careers and join a startup.
How designers and engineers can play nice (and still run with scissors)
DECEMBER 22, 2011
As a designer at engineering-centric companies for the last 10 years or so, I spend a lot of time working with engineers. Designers, you can create these kinds of relationships with engineers too — you just need to cut through the personal biases of both designers and engineers to create space for effective partnerships. I’ve worked in consulting, in academia, and at one of the top engineering companies in the world. Participate in the entire engineering cycle.

Through the Looking Glass: Hiring Sales People
APRIL 15, 2013
Perhaps the most common mistake that I see a technical founder make when building her sales organization is she applies strategies that worked in building the engineering team to the sales hiring process. This may sound shocking, but sales people are different than engineers and treating them like engineers does not work well at all. It starts with the hiring process. A good engineering interview will include some set of difficult problems to solve.
