There was a lot of consumer internet activity again…resurgence of things, but it was still mysterious, venture capital was still kind of closed, 1st time entrepreneurs had a lot of questions that were unanswered, and there was still some sort of hand waiving around all the financing stuff and so we took it on….”. It’s true that it’s cheaper to start companies now and cheaper to get distribution. Yet nearly any entrepreneur who has an idea that other people aren’t doing will tell you that it’s hard to get investors excited. At dinner parties I was wrong for several years but I stuck to my guns.

I had previously raised VC in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2005. I set up my laptop, connected to the Internet, opened the compulsory 15 page PowerPoint deck and waited for my adoring fans. Experienced and serial entrepreneurs in the content management space. I arrived at 12:50 PM in the afternoon, 10 minutes before my start time.

What’s different this time around (as opposed to the tech bubble of the late 1990s) is the widespread use of technology, “digital natives” (millennials who grew up with the Internet and mobile phones) coming of age, and a cultural shift towards self-employment and risk taking (again, powered by stark economic realities).
